Pentabus Young Writers is a FREE 10-month course. It is open to anyone who has an interest in writing or theatre-making. There’s no need to have any writing experience to join, just a keen interest in storytelling and a need to talk about how we live.

Participants will learn about the basic rules of playwriting and creating work for the stage, tutored by professional playwrights, actors, directors and designers.

What to expect

Participants will be supported to write a short play or a solo performance piece which Pentabus will professionally produce as part of our annual Young Writers festival.

Young Writers sessions are held monthly. The sessions run for two hours and are on a weekday evening. This year the course is run at the Hive in Shrewsbury, previously we have run the course in Hereford and at our base in Bromfield.

Sessions 1 – 4 will explore the principles of writing for the stage. How to create tension, how to construct characters, how to take your writing on a journey, towards an action. How to begin and end a play. Participants will decide what they would like to write about. They will begin to work through draft stages and examine their text with professional support and feedback.

Sessions 5 – 9 will be about the creative tools for production. How best to incorporate design, sound, lighting, music and stage directions. For two sessions we will work with professional actors who will read the young writers work in progress and give feedback.

Former Young Writers have gone on to study creative writing at University and two have become professional playwrights, writing for theatre and TV.
