A short site-responsive piece, specially created for the British Museum, This Same England explored the iconography of warfare, past and present, asking what kind of England we are still prepared to defend.

Made exclusively in collaboration with the RSC and The British Museum as part of the Staging The World exhibition, This Same England was a dramatic response to Henry V’s Funeral Achievements – his sword, shield, saddle and helmet. Performed directly in front of these extraordinary objects, the piece followed a contemporary female soldier on the eve of battle. In close contact with the audience, we help her prepare her kit and steady her thoughts as she wrestles with what kind of England we are still prepared to defend.

Through her relationship with her own four objects that connect to the four objects that comprise Henry’s Funeral Achievements, this piece explored the iconography of warfare, then and now. Encompassing song, video and audience interaction, This Same England examined what the idea of Henry’s England means to the British Army today.

Made with the support of Shrewsbury Barracks.

Devised and performed by Lorraine Stanley.
